Every FBA sale gets whittled down by fees before anything reaches you. Here is the exact math the calculator above runs:
Rule of thumb: aim to keep at least 20–35% of the selling price as profit. If fees + cost eat more than 80% of the price, the product is usually too thin to be worth stocking.
Beginners mix these up constantly. They answer two different questions, and a product can look great on one and weak on the other.
Measures how healthy the sale itself is. A $10.35 profit on a $25 sale = 41% margin. Aim for 20–35%+.
Measures return on the money you tie up per unit. Higher ROI means faster reinvestment and cash flow. Aim for 30%+.
Watch both: a low-price product can have a fat ROI but a thin margin, while a premium product can show a big margin but slower cash turnover.
Subtract all costs from your selling price: product cost, Amazon referral fee (about 15% of the sale price), the FBA fulfillment fee, inbound shipping, and any other per-unit costs (PPC, prep). What’s left is your net profit per unit.
Most successful US FBA sellers target a net profit margin of 20–35% and an ROI of 30%+ after all Amazon fees. Below a 15% margin, a single fee increase or return can wipe out your profit.
Two main fees apply: the referral fee (typically 15% of the selling price) and the FBA fulfillment fee (around $3.00–$6.00 for standard-size items based on size and weight). Monthly storage fees may also apply.
